One of the more persistent myths about Shopify is that it eliminates the need for any technical help at all. It doesn't — but it changes what kind of technical help you need, how often you need it, and what it costs. If you're currently paying a WordPress developer or agency to keep your WooCommerce store running, it's worth understanding exactly what shifts after a move to Shopify, rather than assuming the need disappears entirely.
What Shopify genuinely removes the need for
Emergency maintenance. The "a plugin update broke checkout, drop everything" calls that are common on WooCommerce essentially don't happen on Shopify, because Shopify controls and tests the core platform centrally. You're not maintaining a stack of independently-updated plugins that can conflict with each other.
Server and infrastructure management. No one on your team needs to think about PHP versions, database optimization, server resource limits, or hosting migrations. That entire category of work goes away.
Security patching. Platform-level security is Shopify's responsibility. You still need to think about app permissions and your own admin account security, but the constant CVE-patching cycle of WordPress core, themes, and plugins isn't something you manage anymore.
Most day-to-day store operations. Adding products, editing pages, managing inventory, running promotions, adjusting the theme's basic settings — all of this is genuinely accessible to non-technical staff through Shopify's admin, more so than the equivalent WooCommerce/WordPress admin experience.
Where you'll still want technical help
Initial setup and customization. Getting a theme to actually match your brand — beyond swapping colors and logos — usually benefits from someone comfortable with Shopify's Liquid templating language, especially for anything beyond a stock theme's built-in options.
Custom functionality. If your business needs something Shopify doesn't offer natively and no app covers well — a specific configurator, an unusual pricing rule, an integration with a niche internal system — that's custom app or theme development, requiring genuine Shopify development skill.
App integration and troubleshooting. With a real app stack, occasional conflicts or configuration issues do come up. Less frequent and generally lower-stakes than WooCommerce plugin conflicts, but not zero.
API integrations. Connecting Shopify to an ERP, a custom fulfillment system, or other internal tools requires someone who can work with Shopify's Admin API and webhooks — this is real development work regardless of platform.
Performance and conversion optimization work. Shopify's baseline performance is strong, but competitive stores still invest in theme optimization, page speed tuning, and structured data — work that benefits from technical expertise even though the platform doesn't strictly require it to function.
The shift in kind of work, not just amount
The clearest way to describe the change: on WooCommerce, a meaningful share of developer time goes into keeping the store working at all — patching, updating, resolving conflicts. On Shopify, that category mostly disappears, and the developer time that remains goes into making the store better — new features, optimization, integrations. It's not that Shopify stores need zero developer involvement; it's that the involvement shifts from maintenance to growth.
What this means for your budget
Most stores that migrate see their ongoing "just keep it running" developer spend drop substantially, while occasional project-based development spend (new features, integrations, seasonal builds) continues much as before, just less frequently interrupted by unplanned firefighting. If you currently have a developer on retainer purely for maintenance, it's worth having an honest conversation with them about how their role would change post-migration — for many agencies and freelancers, this is a well-understood shift, not a surprise.
The realistic takeaway: Shopify lowers the technical floor required to run a store day-to-day, and it lowers the frequency of technical emergencies significantly. It doesn't eliminate the value of having technical expertise available when you want to build something specific or connect to other systems — no platform does that.
